Full Moon Journaling Exercise

October 5, 2016

Automatic writing :: this is one of my absolute favorite creative journaling exercises to share with my Mindful Writing workshops, university students, and yogis.

Automatic writing is a stream-of-consciousness exercise that allows you to let go of what you "think sounds good."

Here's how to do it ::

1. Find a quiet space for at least 10 minutes. (Yes, that means you've got to turn off your phone ;))
2. Have a notebook open to a blank page and a pen resting nearby.
3. Sit quietly and focus on your breath for 5 minutes. Let your thoughts arise and go, without getting too caught up in any particular story. (If you need help quieting the mind, don't worry, I've got you covered with some videos coming up real soon.)
4. Open your eyes and immediately reach for your pen and paper.
5. Begin to write: once the pen connects to the page, it doesn't leave for at least 5 minutes. No grammar rules apply! No logic applies! Simply write. Whatever words surface, you write them, without censor. You release. You write. And maybe, just maybe, some glimmer of truth or insight or keen beauty will surface.

If you tried this please let me know in the comments! I'm always amazed at how well this exercise works when I teach it live to groups.
